Electrical safety training in Albany, NY

The Capital Region builds chips in Malta, researches them in Albany and builds the generators for gas turbines in Schenectady, all within a short drive of the state capitol. We train the electrical crews who keep fabs, labs and plants running, at your facility or in an in-person class we set up in Albany when you ask.

New York runs a state plan for public employees only. Private employers are inspected by federal OSHA. Every class is live, on the 2027 edition of NFPA 70E, and taught by a Certified Safety Professional. New York electrical safety training requirements →

What the class covers for Albany crews

Cleanroom and tool power.

Fab and research tools sit on dedicated distribution with high fault currents and strict uptime demands. We cover risk assessment before opening tool panels and how to plan work when a shutdown means scrapped wafers.

Generator test floors.

Assembling and testing large generators means high voltage test equipment and energized test setups. We cover test area boundaries, stored energy and who on the crew is qualified to be inside them.

State facilities under PESH.

With state agencies concentrated in Albany, many electricians work for public employers covered by PESH rather than federal OSHA. We help those employers build a written program that stands up to either inspector.

Construction next to operations.

New fab, pharma and plant expansions all go in beside running production. We teach the handoff from construction power to energized equipment and the host and contract employer information exchange.

New York: what applies to your crews

Enforcement: split by employer

New York's state plan covers public employees only. State agencies, counties, cities and school districts answer to PESH at the New York State Department of Labor. Private employers in the Capital Region, from fabs to electrical contractors, are under federal OSHA.

Licensing: city by city

New York has no state electrician license. The City of Albany's Electrical Examining Board tests applicants and authorizes City of Albany electrician licenses, and nearby towns set their own rules or none at all.

Where NFPA 70E fits

Neither OSHA nor PESH enforces NFPA 70E. Employers use it to show how they meet OSHA 1910 Subpart S and 1926 Subpart K, and OSHA can cite the General Duty Clause for a recognized electrical hazard.

Albany's electrical work environment

GlobalFoundries Fab 8 in Malta is the anchor. It employs about 2,500 people, and its expansion plan calls for a new 358,000 square foot fab alongside the existing plant. In June 2025 the company raised its US commitment to $16 billion across New York, Vermont and research. Fab electricians work on tool power, ultrapure water and exhaust systems that cannot go down without scrapping product.

Albany itself hosts the research side. The NY CREATES Albany NanoTech Complex opened the federal EUV Accelerator in July 2025, backed by $1 billion from the state and at least $825 million from Washington, with an ASML High NA EUV scanner being installed. Downtown, the state announced a 16 MW combined heat and power microgrid for the Empire State Plaza in 2017, built into a dormant steam plant on Sheridan Avenue.

Schenectady and Rensselaer counties add heavy manufacturing and pharma. GE Vernova is spending $41 million on its steam and generator Center of Excellence in downtown Schenectady to expand production of the H65 and H84 generators that pair with its HA gas turbines. Regeneron already runs large operations in Rensselaer County and is converting the former Quad Graphics plant in Saratoga Springs into a $2 billion manufacturing site.

Power

National Grid and the Capital Region

National Grid delivers electricity in Albany and across much of upstate New York, about 1.7 million customers over 48,500 miles of distribution lines and 5,600 miles of transmission. Contractors working between Albany, Schenectady and Malta usually coordinate with one utility.

The bigger hazards sit inside the fence. A fab, a research cleanroom and a generator test floor each own their substations and medium-voltage distribution, and the Empire State Plaza microgrid was designed to supply about 90% of the complex's power on site. Those systems, and the program for working on them safely, belong to the owner.

Questions from Albany employers

We are a New York State agency in Albany. Does federal OSHA inspect us?
No. PESH, part of the New York State Department of Labor, covers state and local government employers. It applies the same electrical standards, so your written program and training records should be built to hold up the same way.
Can you train fab or cleanroom technicians without taking tools down?
Yes. Classroom training does not require any shutdown. We schedule around shift rotations and can split sessions so coverage stays in place.
Our contractors work at both public and private sites around Albany. Does that change anything?
The enforcing agency changes, the hazards do not. A program written to NFPA 70E covers both, and we point out how PESH and federal OSHA differ on citations and abatement.
Does a City of Albany electrician license make someone qualified under NFPA 70E?
No. A license covers installation knowledge. NFPA 70E qualification is the employer's documented decision based on training in the hazards and safe work practices for each worker's tasks.
Does finishing the class make someone a qualified electrical worker?
No. Training is one input. Qualified is a determination the employer makes about a specific person on specific equipment, after training plus a demonstration of skills. Every attendee leaves with an individual qualification form and a documented Competency Check so that determination has something to stand on.
