In-person · Missoula, MTElectrical safety training in Missoula, MT
Missoula is western Montana's hub for health care, higher education and rail, built on a century of lumber mills along the Clark Fork. We train the electrical crews who maintain its campuses, hospitals, rail shops and plants, at your facility or in an in-person class we set up in Missoula when you ask.
Private employers in Montana are inspected by federal OSHA. Every class is live, on the 2027 edition of NFPA 70E, and taught by a Certified Safety Professional. Montana electrical safety training requirements →

Four ways to train your Missoula crew
Crews we train in and around Missoula: higher education, healthcare, rail, utilities and cooperatives, wood products and manufacturing, public employers.
What the class covers for Missoula crews
University buildings and the two hospitals run on medium voltage loops and emergency generators. We cover planning work on essential systems and transfer equipment when the building cannot go dark.
Reused mill and plant buildings often carry decades-old switchgear with missing labels and unknown fault data. We teach how to treat unlabeled equipment and when to stop and get an arc flash study done.
Rail electricians work near locomotives, shop power and signal cabinets. We cover the approach boundaries and lockout steps that apply in a shop where several crafts share the same equipment.
Missoula Electric Cooperative runs more than 2,000 miles of line into rural valleys. We cover the premises side of that work, such as irrigation services and shop panels, where 70E rules apply.

Montana: what applies to your crews
Enforcement: federal OSHA
Private employers in Missoula answer to federal OSHA through its Billings Area Office, since Montana runs no OSHA state plan. The University of Montana, the city and the county are public employers covered under state law by the Department of Labor and Industry's Safety and Health Bureau, not OSHA.
Licensing: State Electrical Board
Montana licenses electricians statewide through the State Electrical Board in the Department of Labor and Industry, at the residential, journeyman and master levels. Renewal requires 16 hours of continuing education on code topics.
Where NFPA 70E fits
NFPA 70E is not an OSHA rule. Missoula employers use it to document how they comply with OSHA 1910 Subpart S and 1926 Subpart K, and OSHA can use the General Duty Clause when a recognized electrical hazard goes unaddressed.
Missoula's electrical work environment
The University of Montana is the city's largest employer with 2,842 workers, followed by Missoula County Public Schools at 1,450. St. Patrick Hospital, the region's only Level II trauma center, employs 1,321, and Community Medical Center adds 1,015. That puts much of Missoula's electrical work inside campus central plants, labs and hospital essential power systems.
Rail is the other big employer. Montana Rail Link was headquartered in Missoula and employed more than 1,000 people before BNSF took back operations of its 937-mile route on January 1, 2024. Shops, signals and yard power along the Clark Fork still need electricians who know how to work around moving equipment.
The mill economy has shrunk but not vanished. The Bonner plywood plant closed in 2007, the Bonner sawmill in 2008 and the Smurfit-Stone pulp mill in 2010. Roseburg closed its 1969 particleboard plant in May 2024, ending about 150 jobs. Old industrial buildings are now drawing new loads, including Krambu's proposed data center in the Bonner Industrial Park east of town.
Campuses, rail and reused mill sites in the Clark Fork valley
These are the Missoula employers and sites that keep electrical crews busy. Some are steady institutions and some are new projects on old industrial land.
| Site | What is there | Status |
|---|---|---|
| University of Montana State of Montana | Montana's first university and the city's largest employer, with 2,842 workers. | Operating |
| St. Patrick Hospital St. Patrick Hospital | 195-bed hospital and the region's only Level II trauma center. | Operating |
| Community Medical Center Community Medical Center | Missoula hospital with western Montana's only separate pediatric ICU. | Operating |
| Former Montana Rail Link network BNSF Railway | 937 route miles run from Missoula, operated by BNSF since January 2024. | Operating |
| Missoula Montana Airport terminal Missoula Montana Airport | New terminal finished in 2022, with an eastward expansion phase following. | Operating |
| Krambu Bonner data center Krambu | Proposed data center in the Bonner Industrial Park requesting up to 3 MW to start, under county review in 2026. | Planned |
NorthWestern Energy and Missoula Electric Cooperative
NorthWestern Energy is Missoula's main electric and gas provider, and Missoula Electric Cooperative serves the surrounding valleys. The co-op reports about 13,800 members, 17,149 meters and 2,146 miles of line, with a power mix it describes as 95% carbon free and mostly hydropower.
New large loads face local conditions. Missoula County rules adopted in 2022 require new computing operations to supply their own renewable energy, and Krambu's Bonner proposal would have NorthWestern deliver outside power over existing lines that may need upgrades. Any project like that adds substation, generator and switchgear work for local electrical contractors.
